Carey Custom Rifle Co

Services

We are not a general gunsmithing company. We purposely limit what we offer. What we do offer, is the best rifle, know how and workmanship available. The only barrel finishing we offer is bead blasting. We don't like the rattle can finishes. You can spray and bake as well as we can.

There are companies that offer everything from bluing to color anodizing and camo dipping. It's actually less expensive for you, if you control the finish and where its done.

We offer our trade discount to you from selected vendors that do camo dipping.

AR15 platform rifle work.

We are a Rock River Arms Premier Dealer and primarily use RRA and Stag parts to build a rifle. We can build a match grade varmint rifle from the right parts almost as economically as we can from a kit that only offers a certain number of options.

Twist rates,

The optimal twist rate in any caliber, is the slowest rate that will stabilize the bullet you wish to shoot. An example would be a match grade 52 grain 224 cal bullet. That bullet is best stabilized in a 14 inch twist, at over 3000 fps. You can't over stabilize a bullet using a faster twist, however, the best accuracy is archived at the edge of under stabilizing the bullet. That said, what would be the advantage of a 1-8 twist if you were going to shoot a 55 grain bullet, when we know the 1-14 would give you the best accuracy?

In simple terms the advantage is, the rifle has the ability to stabilize a 80 grain bullet if you ever wanted to shoot one. In short a 1-8 twist barrel is the best choice for an AR 15 predator hunting rifle, for the simple reason, the AR is not a bench rest rifle and the difference in accuracy vs twist rates is not an issue. Most all of the current major manufacturers are using either a 1-8 or a 1-9 twist in AR 15's which allows the user to use bullets up to 80 grains if needed or desired. The difference in accuracy with different twists in an AR 15 style rifle is mostly unmeasureable.

The 75 grain Hornady AMax bullet is nothing less than outstanding in an AR 15 with a 1-8 twist barrel, one of the best kept secrets in the predator hunting world. If you haven't tried them you should. The bullets ability to buck the wind is outstanding. The AMax bullet when seated to magazine length will show a little case neck at the ogive of the bullet. I have shot quite a few loaded this way without a problem. If you like you can use the 75 grain HP bullet which will seat even with the case neck.

We Finish contour our Shilen custom barrels from 1 1/4" blanks, which allows us to do things like put a 26" barrel on an upper with a CAR hand guard, or anything in between. Because of the limitless options available on the AR platform rifles, we price custom rifles on a per specification basis.

We have a large Cincinnati horizontal mill that will automatically cut flutes up to 22 inches long. We use expensive custom made radius flute cutters on our mill, no keyway, gear, or ball endmill cutters..

8-3/16" flutes 18" long on a .900" bull barrel

For barrel fluting, add $125. 00 for 6 or 8 flutes when we are building the upper.$145.00 for us to dissemble your upper and flute.

6 - 5/16"(.312") are used on .930" bull barrels, 8-3/16"(.187")are used on .750" sporter weight barrels.

These are 5/16"on a .930" bull barrel
